The Story of Gray Lady

Gray Lady Entertainment began with the unwavering encouragement of Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller in 2002 when Kim was directing Amy Stiller in Fully Committed by Becky Mode at the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. With unprecedented ticket sales of that time, Fully Committed was the highest grossing show ever. And, until this day…Amy is the only female, anywhere, to have played the role of “Sam” a role that was written for a man.

Over the years, when I was producing shows in Massachusetts, New England or the Cape and Islands, people would never question the company name Gray Lady Entertainment. But, the second I stepped back to New York City or the Midwest, people would look at me and say, “you don’t have gray hair!!”

The fact is we call Nantucket “The Grey Lady”. Nantucket is an island thirty-three miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The island building ordinance says all buildings old and new need to be built with wooden shingles so on Nantucket, whether it’s a $30 million dollar mansion or a small saltbox, all structures are to be built with wooden shingles.

The sea salt in the air directly affects the shingles by turning them gray, so whether you are arriving on island by ferry or flying into Operations at the airport, looking down and around the island, as a whole, all of the houses and buildings are grey. It’s because of the effects of sea salt in the air. Plus, there’s constant unpredictable incoming fog that islanders and tourists have to deal with on a daily basis which also has a lot to do with the island name "The Grey Lady."

Other local organizations spell their name Grey Lady. I choose to use the American version of the spelling of Gray. Hence, Gray Lady Entertainment, Inc.

And, fun fact… I now actually have gray hair!! Yay, me!!
